Winsløw, Jacob ( or Jacques-Bénigne) (1669-1760), Danish anatomist. Regarded by many as the greatest European anatomist of his time, Winsløw did much to condense and systematize the body of anatomical information then known. He was one of the first to study anatomy precisely and systematically. In his study of muscles he observed that muscles do not function independently, as flexors or supinators, but rather that muscles operate within a synergistic relationship. His classic descriptions of the oblique popliteal ligament and epiploic foramen were published in 1732 as part of a multivolume work on human anatomy.
