James /primarystressjamacrmz/ , William (1842-1910), American psychologist and philosopher. James is generally regarded as one of the great authorities in psychology. He founded in 1876 the first laboratory for psychological research in the United States and studied the relationship between psychology and physiology. In 1890 he published Principles of Psychology, a seminal study that firmly placed psychology upon a physiological foundation and helped to establish it as an independent science. About this same time he independently developed what is now known as the James-Lange theory.
